Participating in the Cultural Disparities in Diversities competition for HOSA was a transformative experience for me. My interest in this competition stemmed from observing how my own family approaches healthcare differently, which sparked my curiosity about how various cultures navigate health and wellness. This curiosity led me to delve deeper into the subject, and I discovered Rachel E. Specter’s enlightening work, Cultural Disparities in Health and Illness. Her insights provided a window into the diverse ways that cultures interact with healthcare systems, revealing the profound impact that cultural beliefs and practices can have on health outcomes.

Winning 1st place in the Texas competition was an incredible honor, but the real achievement was the realization of how crucial cultural competency is in healthcare. Through the competition, I was astounded by how much of a difference culturally sensitive care can make in patient outcomes. It became clear that understanding and respecting cultural differences isn't just a matter of politeness but a critical factor in delivering effective and equitable healthcare.

This experience has left me wondering why there isn’t a more prominent emphasis on cultural competency in the healthcare field. Given the significant impact it has on patient care and outcomes, integrating cultural competency into medical training and practice seems not only beneficial but necessary. It is essential for healthcare providers to recognize and embrace cultural diversity to ensure that all patients receive compassionate and effective care tailored to their unique backgrounds and beliefs.

Ultimately, this journey has reinforced my belief in the importance of cultural competence and has inspired me to advocate for a more inclusive approach to healthcare that values and addresses the diverse needs of all patients.
